โWhat? Absolutely not. You really must be out of your damn mind if you think I'd leave you here, alone.โ Cassandra didnโt want to be associated with the drug crowd but she wouldn't let someone in distress fend for themself. And for a brief moment, she frowned- wondering how often Maya resided in this form and how often she did so alone, weak prey for a hungry animal. โBut I need you to stay awake.โ Her voice rises, almost echoing in the bathroom. โThough I see no issue with smacking you awake.โ Cassandra snickers while bending down to her knees. โAnd please donโt tell me I need to call an ambulance because you certainly donโt look well.โ

Ezra stood still and silent as a stone in the bathroom doorway, trying not to do so much as breathe too hard. He feared that if he did the scent of blood and vomit would permeate itself in his senses and he too would end up bowing by a throne he had no interest in visiting. At least the person sat in the bathtub wasnโt the same as the one whose blood dotted the walls in a gory retelling of the night but that didnโt make standing there and keeping watch made him feel all that much better. Heโd had too much to drink and smoked more than his share through the night and his stomach was just queasy enough that it threatened the little stability he had left in him.
He didnโt like blood the way it was and had never been able to handle vomit, but someone had to watch out for the girl resting in the bathtub on her own insistence. Surely there was no one else in the home who would do as much and he feared leaving her too long would cause something else to happen. He may have been drunk but he was not out of his mind as such and who knew what else may happen if he left the station he had placed himself in. He was slightly surprised no one had called for help and that no one had shown up at the party with a cop or two yet, but no one wanted to involve the police if they didnโt have to. Hell, the last thing he needed was another scandal on his name.ย
The fact was though, he needed a moment to breathe before he became too lightheaded and useless in his protection of the stranger in the room with him. It was quiet enough in the corner of the home they were in and close enough that he could leave and return quickly before anything could happen. โLet me find an ice pack for that nasty bruise,โ he spoke the words quickly and loudly to his own ears but that may have been a result of the headache that had reared itself behind his eyes. โIโll be back in a moment, donโt hurt yourself any more before I get back.โ
He didnโt wait for an acknowledgment of his words before he spun around to make his way toward the kitchen and air that didnโt smell metallic and acidic. Just long enough for him to steal a cup from the countertop, fill it with water and rummage around the freezer for an ice pack that didnโt appear to exist. He made due with a bag of frozen vegetables, downed the water and filled it again from the sink. The house seemed eerily still despite the people he could hear still milling about and speaking, a phone ringing out loudly in the distance. Many voices and not enough movement to accompany them, almost as if moving too much might make them the next prey in the room. He turned his back to the stillness and returned to the bathroom down the hallway, bracing himself with a few long, deep breaths before reentering and placing both the cup of water and bag of vegetables on the lip of the bathtub.
