Selena was born in the land of Oz. She had been born soon after her parents met and fell in love. Unlike the storybook tells Zelena did kiss Hades and did restart his heart. Soon she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Despite having Hades and their newborn daughter Zelena felt Hades was using her and this child to weaken her. Hades and this child would stand in the way of her seeking revenge on Regina. So only a day after the birth of her daughter Zelena renounced her love for Hades and banished him and their newborn from Oz. This heartbreak caused Hades heart to in fact break though not stop completely like before. Though it was broken enough to damn him back to the Underworld again and he was forced to return there with his and Zelena's daughter. Hades remained in the Underworld with his and Zelena's daughter. Though he wasn't father of the year he treasured the baby, she was the child he had with the woman he truly loved. Zelena hadn't even given the baby a name before handing her over to Hades so Hades named her Selena, in a way after Zelena. The name was fitting, as Selena grew she was the picture of Zelena right down to the red hair. This was bitter sweet for Hades. He loved Selena but he was also forced to look at a face so similar to the woman he loved. As a small child Selena was lonely, having only dead children to play with. She was close with Hades though, a complete Daddy's girl. As Selena grew so did her magic. She had what seemed to be normal magical abilities until one day. Selena had a few friends, though they were children who had died. One friend she made often spoke about how badly she missed her mother. Feeling sorry for her friend Selena attempted to use her magic to help her and that was when Selena discovered one magical ability Hades would have prefered her not to have. She could send souls back to the land of the living. When he discovered what she had done with her friend he was furious at her. It was the first time he had ever shouted, had truly gotten angry enough to frighten her. From that moment on a wedge grew between the father and daughter. Hades kept a close eye on Selena having his two henchmen Pain and Panic keep track of Selena and everything she did. Though she loved Hades she was beginning to resent the Underworld and her mother, the woman who had doomed a living soul like herself to be trapped in the Underworld. When Selena turned eighteen she finally managed to escape the Underworld going to a place she had longed to go. The Enchanted Forest. There she began to finally have freedom, though she was always outrunning Pain and Panic who were trying to get her back to the Underworld, they feared what Hades would do to them. When news spread that Regina's Dark Curse was coming Selena attempted to escape it and feld to the Land of Untold Stories. There she not only escaped the curse but was finally free of Pain and Panic as well. Selena missed her father though couldn't bring herself to face him again. When she left that was when his already badly broken heart finally stopped.
