"Thanks again for these tickets, Jess, I appreciate it more than you know." Alicia was on speaker phone with her assistant as she slipped on a comfortable band t-shirt and a pair of worn-out jeans. Jessica had just dropped off two backstage VIP tickets to the Bon Jovi concert and Alicia had plans to go out with her... Future mother-in-law? She quickly shook that thought from her head. It was far too soon to think about things like that.
Donna was a sweet, wonderful, strong woman who Alicia adored. They'd met a few months ago at one of Travis's games and hit it off immediately. Alicia adored and admired the woman, and they had become fast friends. And... If someday, she did become Alicia's mother-in-law, it would be a wonderful thing. Once she was off the phone with her assistant, Alicia checked her appearance in the mirror, making sure she looked alright. She had done her makeup after getting out of the shower and then had gotten dressed. She seemed to be ready.
She chose a bag from her closet and piled all of the necessary accessories inside of it, then she pulled her bag over her shoulder, grabbed her keys and sunglasses, and headed out the door, locking up afterward. Her cats made no movement as they watched her leave, sleeping contentedly on the couch. She had made plans to meet up with Donna at a restaurant where they would have dinner and then the two of them would head over to the concert together.
On her way to the restaurant, she put on some Bon Jovi, to get herself in the mood for the concert. Her speakers were blaring, she was singing along at the top of her lungs, and the music was so loud that she didn't hear her phone ringing. If she had noticed, she would have seen that was her boyfriend, probably calling to see how things were going with his mother. As she pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, she turned the radio down. She searched the parking lot for Donna's car and when she didn't find it, she parked and waited a moment. If she couldn't find her soon, she would text her.
When Bennett told his mom he knew the likelihood was that she was going to fly to Kansas City as soon as she could. Part of him wanted her to stay home and allow them to grieve themselves. The other part of him knew he wanted his mom there for support. That part almost always won. Bennett was a mamaโs boy through and through. He always had been. He loved having his mom at his games and spending time with her whenever he could. She was who was going to be on the bus for the Super Bowl parade with him if the team won. When she sent her plane ticket he wasnโt surprised. โYouโre the best mama. Thank you.โ Was all Bennett sent back as he held Honey through some of the hardest things he was sure they would go through.
Bennett knew that having his mom around during something so difficult was maybe not what Honey needed. He had been a little nervous to tell her that she was on her way but when he did Honey looked a little relieved. He wasnโt sure if it was because she loved his mom or if it was because Honey knew he would be supported when she couldnโt pick herself up off the ground because she was so sad. He knew she was worried about him just as much as he was worried about her, especially since she had caught him sobbing about it all in private the night before.
Honey had fallen asleep when Bennett got the text that his mom had landed. He was somewhat thankful she had knowing that they would be able to talk and he would be able to share his feelings without worrying Honey. When the knock on the door hit he was relieved, opening it quickly and immediately wrapping his arms around his mother. He let a deep and shaky breath out. โDamn it mom, I thought I was okay but you being here set me off again.โ He said trying to make light of what he was feeling as tears fell down his face again. He squeezed his eyes closed trying to stop them but it didnโt help much. Stepping out of the way and taking the bags from her hand Bennett lead his mother to the kitchen so he could put the food she had brought away. โThank you for coming mom.โ He said as he focused on the task at hand. โI donโt know what to do. Hon is sleeping. But I swear she hasnโt slept since we found out. Sheโs constantly crying. Iโฆ what do I do?โ
Falling in love with Bennett meant falling in love with his family too, and Donna was no exception โ Honey felt fortunate that the older woman accepted her so quickly into the Riggs clan.
But when the miscarriage happened, and Donna promised she would come out to spend time with Honey and her son, the blonde couldnโt help but to feel like a burden. She didnโt mind that she was coming โ in fact, she was so grateful to have company on hand to keep her mind off of what had happened โ but knowing the only reason she was currently on her way to them was because of her body failing her made her feel a hundred times worse. With the pinging of her phone, Honey glanced down at the screen, Donnaโs message illuminated in the group text the three of them shared, and she wanted to smile, but with such heavy feelings, she wasnโt sure how she could.
A knock on the door an hour or so later pulled Honey from her self-loathing thoughts, her feet slowly carrying her to the other side of the door. Her digits wrapped around the knob, twisting it to pull the door open, Donna waiting patiently on the other side. And as she dropped her bags and pulled Honey in for a hug, the blonde followed suit, her arms wrapping tightly around her. โHi Mama,โ she said softly, trying to hold back her emotions โ she didnโt want to cry today, she had already done enough of that over the last week. She held onto the hug for a few moments before finally letting go, leaning down to grab some of Donnaโs bags. โHere, let me help,โ she said as she stood.
Stepping aside, Honey let Donna into their home first, heading into the kitchen to set the groceries down on the counter. โThank you for coming, and for stopping for some groceriesโ, she had been slacking in the grocery department, unsure of when the last time she hit the store was since the miscarriage. โHow was your flight?โ She asked, forcing herself to smile.
"i didn't want to interrupt anything. i know you been busy with the charity and i didn't know if you had anyone over."ย he could tell by the way that she was acting that dakota most likely texted him talking about jason's retirement debate. that, or she just knows her son as well as she does. either one is a possibility given everyone knows jason has been a mama's boy his entire life, and dakota's mother figure in her life has quickly become donna. maybe dakota did, it'll make bringing it up and talking about it easier in his eyes.
shutting the door behind him once he let go of his mama's embrace, jason slid his flip flops off by the front door before walking into the living room and taking a seat on the edge of the couch. he knew his mama would ask the standard questions, but he knew that he needed to really just rip off the bandaid and tell her how he's feeling and the debates he was having about this whole retirement thing.
"she texted you, didn't she?"ย his mama could lie and say no, but he knew her relationship with dakota, and if his wife was going to speak to anyone about jason's debates, it was going to be her. he knew his mama would support anything he decided to do, because he's already made it known he would stay with the eagles organization no matter. he just is rather stumped onย howย he wants to stay within it.
"I'm torn, i said this year was my last, but the way the team fell apart the last season, and in such a disgusting way, i don't know if i could walk away without feeling some type of guilt. nick, god he's so useless sometimes, and anytime I've tried to speak to jalen about what happened to him midway through the season, he wants to blame everyone else but himself. i was going to suggest him become captain after my retirement, but now i don't know if i should even retire" he ranted, crossing his arms over his chest loosely as his eyes remained on his mama.ย "i just don't know what to do. dakota said she'll support whatever i decide, which i knew this, but...i'm not getting younger, mama, and the girls aren't either. i want to enjoy this time when they're young. and, with dakota and i wanting to try for ano --"ย he cut himself off quickly, hoping she didn't catch his almost slip up.
By eight 'o clock the next morning, the Riggs household was up and running - Dakota putting in laundry while the girls were in the playroom. Jason was out working out with a couple of his teammates, so that left her alone for the time being which the young woman didn't mind because sometimes it was good for them to have time away from each other. When Dakota first met Donna all those years ago, she definitely could see why Jason and Bennett had become the great men they were because they had such an amazing mother. She vividly remembers the first time Jason brought her over to his parents' house and she ended up unexpectedly dropping the F bomb in the middle of dinner, which had left her extremely embarrassed until the rest of the family erupted with laughter. From that moment on, she knew that she was in.
Dakota hadn't had the best relationship with her own mother, so having Donna in her life truly was a blessing in disguise. The other woman quickly becoming her shoulder to lean on in the tough times - struggles with her own self-worth and abilities as a mother and wife, times when her mental health got really bad, when she got overwhelmed with the kids and needed a break. Her mother in law was always there and gave her the support and love she needed. And honestly as far as she was concerned, Donnaย wasย her mother,
She was so far in her own head that she hadn't first realized the knock at the door until she heard the excited squeals of the girls as the ran to the door. Shaking herself out of her thoughts, she then answered the door as she stepped aside and allowed the other woman to enter. "Hey mama! I wasn't expecting you to drop by. You're always a welcomed sight over here." She murmured softly with a smile as she grabbed the coffee from her, giving the other woman a hug.
